Gathering: Celebrating with โค๏ธ Heart, ๐ Humor, and a Touch of the Unexpected ๐
Simple Ideas to Spark Connection Across Generations This Holiday Season
It seems my family gatherings
were often more about the unexpected
than the expected!ย
How about for you?
Over the years, Iโve had my share of holiday surprisesโฆ
Nothing says โholiday spiritโ quite like a clogged kitchen sink and a garbage disposal that decides to take the day off! Oh boy!
One year, just as we were about to sit down, the ground started rumbling with a major earthquake. We all froze, forks halfway to our mouths, wondering, โShould we stay or make a run for it?โ
Another year, the host (there were only six of us around the table!) acted like I wasnโt even thereโdidnโt speak to me, pass a dish, or acknowledge my presence at all. It was as if Iโd turned invisible without realizing it! Ha!
How about the year my sisterโs ex-spouse, known for his volatile, unpredictable behavior, showed up uninvited โ and armed, no less! Letโs just say, holiday cheer took on a whole new meaning that year.
Some years, I felt so alone that I found myself often in tears and even had a few panic attacks throughout the holiday season. Those were tough times, but those experiences led to me appreciating connection all the more.
Then there was the holiday when a stepfather slapped my nephew in the middle of dinner. No one stuck around for leftovers that year, and my parents stepped in to become parents once again. Truly, there should be an award for any grandparent who chooses to parent their grandchildren. Now that is Grand-Love!
There was the year my aunt took a tumble while showing off her Irish jig and ended up in the emergency room. With a mom and her seven siblings raised in Ireland, Irish dancing was practically a family requirementโeven if it meant a trip to the hospital!
Of course, there were the grand, extended family gatherings in the home I grew up in, filled with my parents, siblings, and so many others โ until one day, they were no more.
And, of course, there are the Friendsgivingsโthose gatherings with people who may not be family by blood but feel more like family than some relatives. Who will be included this year?
So, how about you?
What are your expectations for this yearโs gatherings?
โข Will it be โtraditionalโ or something more unconventional?
โข With family, friends, or a mix of both?
โข Celebrating solo, just with a significant other, or escaping on a holiday trip?
โข Or perhaps a picnic, an outdoor feast, or a walk along a trail or the oceanโs edge?
Whatever your plans,
Iโm willing to bet itโll be a multi-generational one.
Why am I willing to make that bet?
Recently, I came across an infographic that got me thinking
โin 2024, our population is almost perfectly balanced across four generations.1
Pretty remarkable, isnโt it?
Each generation now represents around 20% of our population:
20% Boomers
20% Gen X
20% Millennials
20% Gen Z
The remaining 20% consists of Silent Generation/Pre-Boomers and Gen Alpha (who are still in childhood).
In 2024 we find ourselves with
just about equal representation across four generations.
Have you noticed this around you?
Itโs easy to miss unless weโre specifically looking for it.
Letโs pause here ~ as if weโre watching a total solar eclipse!
It is certainly rareโessentially extraordinaryโto have four generations just about evenly represented in our population!
Curious about just how extraordinary this is?
Iโve added a short article below
to shed some light on this rare occurrence.

This even distribution offers such an incredible opportunity
โone that could add depth and meaning to our gatherings.
As with all living things, change is inevitable. And with change comes the opportunity to see our holiday gatherings in a new light. As our traditions evolve, we can embrace doing things a bit differently without feeling overwhelmed.

3 Ways to Make
This Holiday Season Truly Meaningful
Change gives us the opportunity to make different choices.
Regardless of age, weโve all learnedโespecially post-pandemicโthat our stability and enjoyment grows when we are more mindful of our own choices and way of living.
So maybe, this year, before saying โyesโ to everything, youโll find the freedom to intentionally shape how you want the holiday season to feel.
Do you have hopes or visions for the holidays? Some of us love to plan every detail; others may prefer to go with the flow. If you havenโt felt fully in control of how your holidays unfold, perhaps this is the year to share your hopes with those around you. Aim for a season that feels like a win-win for everyone.
โGathering Coordinatorโ LOLโฆ often known as the Host or Hostess!
Whether theyโve taken on this role year after year or are stepping into it for the first time, the coordinator deserves to be honored. Chances are, theyโve put in countless hours envisioning the gathering, prepping, cooking, cleaning, and moreโoften at a big personal cost.
If you havenโt considered it yet, take a moment to acknowledge the heart and effort theyโve poured into making the day special. Whether theyโre upholding tradition or bringing something new, their effort deserves our gratitude.
Show appreciation in ways that feel meaningful to you. Their vision might differ from yours, but can you help make it a beautiful day? Engage fully, bring something to complement their spread, offer a hand before or during the gathering, and most of all, let them know you value not just what theyโve done but who they are.
And if youโre not thrilled with the dayโs plan, well, maybe itโs your turn to volunteer to coordinate next yearโs gathering. ๐
Weโre living in a unique time with multiple generations sharing space, making it a perfect opportunity to connect across age groups.
Hereโs an idea:
Maybe this year, challenge yourself to personally connect with everyone there, or if youโre more reserved (like me!), set a goal to reach out to at least one person from each of the other generations represented.
Want a little help getting started?
Hereโs a simple two-part plan for meaningful connections.
PART 1: Pre-Gathering
Youโre probably already aware of this differenceโthat each generation has its preferred way of communicating. Connecting in their comfort zone can make a big difference.
If youโre hesitant to reach out, I hear ya!
But hereโs my encouragement: โJust Do It!โ
โJust Do It!โ is actually a motto that resonates strongly with the Gen X approach โtheyโll appreciate your effort (and Millennials and Gen Z will notice too).
Once youโve connected in this way, itโs likely the connection will remain open.
So yes, โJust Do It!โ
PART 2: Day Of Gathering
Keep in mind that meaningful connections amongst family often happen over time and with small and personable exchanges. No long conversations necessary.
Now, you might be thinking,
โArenโt these just common social gestures?โ
And yes, they are!
Thatโs the point.
Making meaningful connections often comes down to simple, consistent actionsโespecially with those from a generation different from your own.
Even just one or two of these small gestures
can have a big impact
helping to build true connections with those you consider family.
At family gatherings, we know to expect the unexpected.
But perhaps this year, we can welcome those surprises with a spirit of connection and openness, knowing that every twist and turn adds to the story weโll cherish in the years to come.
So, hereโs to meaningful โค๏ธ moments, a few ๐ surprises, and a ๐ฅ holiday season filled with ๐ connections that truly matter.
2024 Generational Eclipse โจ๐ ๐
A Truly Rare Occurrence Happening Now!
Have you ever experienced a solar eclipse? Itโs a moment when the world pauses, everyone stands together, looking up, as the sun and moon align in a stunning, rare display. We recently had one that was viewable from the contiguous USA.
Were you one of the fortunate few who were in the pathway on April 8, 2024?ย
Well, something just as rare and special is also occurring this year.
Itโs not just rareโitโs extraordinary!
Will you be among the fortunate ones
who pause to contemplate this occurrence?
You may ask, โWhat occurrence?โ
The Generational Eclipse of 2024!ย โจ๐ ๐
I believe this is the first time in modern history where the U.S. population is beautifully balanced across generations, with nearly equal spread of Boomers, Gen X, Millennials, and Gen Zโeach making up around 20% of the population.
Of course, Gen Alphaโthe youngest kids on the blockโand elders (Silent/ Pre-Boomers) are adding their own energy to the mix.
Itโs as if every generation has pulled up a chair, ready to share, listen, contribute, and envision infinite possibilities ahead.ย
BTW, a Generational Eclipse is not a recognized sociological term!
Itโs a metaphor I coined to express how rare and significant this current alignment is.
Why is this such a Big Deal?
Usually, society is a bit lopsided, with either a large population of younger folks, like during the Baby Boom, or older generations forming the largest slice of the demographic pie.
But this year? This year is different.
Itโs an opportunity to experience a dynamic we may not see againโor perhaps only a few more times during our lifetimes!
For a brief moment in time, the generations are fairly balanced
โa rare & extraordinary alignment of influence, ideas, and voices.
Think about it: Boomers are here with a lifetime of experiences and wisdom, Gen X with their adaptability and grit, Millennials bringing creativity and social savvy, and Gen Z with fresh perspectives and tech know-how. Each generation has its own strengths, and right now, no one group outweighs the others. Itโs a genuine meeting of the minds across ages, backgrounds, and worldviews.
Of course, I realize that Boomers and Gen X primarily hold the positions of power and influence. The scale is weighted in their favor so far. But since itโs rare for those in leadership to come across such a dynamic, diverse, and assertive generational mix, perhaps it is enough to tilt the scale back. Perhaps visionary leaders will begin to loosen their grip and explore these new possibilities with us!
The Gift ๐ of the Generational Eclipse
So, what does this mean for you?
Just like during a solar eclipse, when you have only a few minutes to see the sunโs corona amidst the darkness, this generational balance wonโt last.
As Gen Z moves further into adulthood, and Gen Alpha grows up, the numbers will shift. Whether a similar balance will form again is a question for the demographers, LOL.
But what I do know and recognize is that this unique generational alignment is fleetingโa special moment to celebrate and explore.
โGenerational Eclipseโ is just a metaphor, not an actual term or thing, LOL.
Iโm hoping the imagery of a total solar eclipse will evoke us to notice these rare generational moments when cultural shifts are more visible, despite their ever-changing and shifting ways.
I see this rare alignment as a chance to connect in ways we might never have thought possible.
Itโs an invitation to talk, to learn from each other,
and to see life from multiple perspectives.
Each generation brings something valuable to the table, allowing us to experience the full spectrum of those insights.
Itโs an opportunity for intergenerational โจ magic. โจ
This is the time! โฐ
If youโve ever wanted to know what makes other generations tick, this is your timeโAsk a Boomer about their experiences growing up, or get a Gen Z friend to share their vision for the future. Take this moment to cross the generational divide and find common ground. (Want some conversation starters? Jump back to here.)
Did you know Gen Z & Millennials often wish for more opportunities to collaborate with older generations?
(Are you listening Gen X and Boomers?)
Weโre all here, in almost equal numbers, sharing this rare moment together.
The next time youโre at a family gathering, workplace meeting, or even chatting with neighbors, remember that weโre living through a one-of-a-kind alignment. This Generational Eclipse โจ๐ ๐ is our opportunity to appreciate each otherโs unique journeys, embrace our differences, and maybe even learn something that shifts how we see the world.
So, letโs make the most of it.
Who knows when the starsโor, rather, the generationsโwill align like this again?
Donโt. Let. This. Moment. Pass.

I grew up with having to remove myself from the adults to sit at the kids table. It never felt good. I love your idea of generational inclusivity when we gather together! There is so much we can learn from each other. Thank you for the wonderful post!
โHonor yourself firstโ~ something many of us forget to do. And such a wonderful reminder
Joyous holidays Mo ! ๐
